Hi Folks,

Good Tuesday to you and I hope your week’s off to a good start. We’ve got another day with a TON of new content for you. I hope you’ll consider buying the Footballguys Insider so you can get access to everything we do.

Quick note for you NFL History Guys or people that just like to study leadership, Peter King’s Monday Morning QB is always a must read column. Yesterday, he relayed a fascinating (at least to me) Training Camp Speech from Paul Brown given to his team in the summer of 1973. I love this kind of thing. Let me know if you thought it was interesting too.

Of course, we’ve got the news and notes for you so let’s get to it.

SITE NEWS

A. 2nd Opinion Medical Review – Offseason Edition
One of my favorite features is our “2nd Opinion” where our resident Footballguys Medical Doctor, Dr. Jene Bramel, MD takes a look at injury situations. It’s pretty rare to see an intersection of this kind of medical knowledge with the football expertise Jene brings. It’s a must read column each week during the season and here he breaks down some of the injuries we’re watching this summer. If you’re thinking about buying the Footballguys Insider, I’d buy it just for Jene’s column. Seriously.

MIN – RB Toby Gerhart thinks RB Adrian Peterson will be ready

Source: ProFootballTalk.com

Minnesota Vikings RB Toby Gerhart said he thinks RB Adrian Peterson (knee) will be ready to play in Week 1. ‘I think (Adrian Peterson) will (play in the opener),’ Gerhart said. ‘You can never be surprised with Adrian. The way he comes to work every day, the way he pushes himself – he was flying around, straight-line speed, moving out there, racing Percy up the hill, doing conditioning stuff … I haven’t seen him in a couple weeks now, but I’m sure he’s continued to make leaps and bounds in progress, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s ready. You can never count Adrian out.’

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Peterson is already back to sprinting but we expect the team to be cautious with him as he comes back from this injury. Several sources close to the team feel the Vikings will ease him back into the lineup during the regular season. This could mean an increased role for Gerhart during September.

CLE – Trent Richardson to carry majority of workload

Source: Akron Beacon Journal – Nate Ulrich

Cleveland Browns RB Trent Richardson is considered a lock to carry a significant load as the feature back in head coach Pat Shurmur’s West Coast offense.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Nothing but great news for the Browns here. Richardson is essentially the next Adrian Peterson and a true workhorse back who can grind down a defense. We like his angry running style, speed, and ability as a receiver out of the backfield. Richardson is going off the board as a RB1 in the late first- or early second-round of most fantasy drafts.

NYJ – Jeff Otah acquired

Source: Twitter

The New York Jets have acquired OT Jeff Otah from the Carolina Panthers for an undisclosed conditional draft choice.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is a boom/bust trade for the Jets here. If Otah can stay healthy (and the Jets can motivate him) then he’ll greatly help the ground game. When Otah plays up to his potential he’s a suffocating road grader on the right side of the line. On the other hand, Otah has appeared in just four games over the past two seasons for the Panthers. Now that Otah has moved on guys like Bruce Campbell and Byron Bell will compete for Carolina’s starting Right Tackle position.

OAK – WR Louis Murphy traded

Source: Yahoo! Sports – Jason Cole

The Oakland Raiders have traded WR Louis Murphy to the Carolina Panthers. It is not known what the Raiders will receive in the trade.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Murphy was in a fight for a roster spot, and the Raiders likely received a late-round pick for him. This move helps the chances of undrafted WR Rod Streater to make the team.

CAR – WR Louis Murphy acquired

Source: Yahoo! Sports – Jason Cole

The Carolina Panthers have acquired WR Louis Murphy from the Oakland Raiders. It is not known what the Raiders will receive in the trade.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Murphy gives veteran depth to the Panthers thin WR corps. We can’t imagine him getting much playing time if guys like Brandon LaFell and David Gettis stay healthy. Murphy has briefly flashed talent during his pro career but has been held back by injuries.

BUF – QB Ryan Fitzpatrick sees lots of optimism

Source: NFL.com – Ian Rapoport

Buffalo Bills QB Ryan Fitzpatrick said he is excited to arrive for training camp, as there is a lot of optimism surrounding the team heading into the 2012 season. ‘I think the optimism surrounding the team right now is really up there,’ Fitzpatrick said. ‘It’s the highest it’s been since I’ve been in Buffalo going into year four. We feel that as players. We feel the excitement and optimism, to be honest.’

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

There’s plenty of reason for Bills fans to be excited. They have arguably the best D-Line in the league, an improved secondary, and multiple weapon at the RB position. We feel Buffalo could make a run at the playoffs in 2012.

MIA – WR Chad Ochocinco changes name again

Source: NFL.com – Jeff Darlington

Miami Dolphins WR Chad Ochocinco was in a courthouse Monday, July 23, for a hearing finalizing a process that allowed him to legally change his name back to Johnson. He originally changed his name to Ochocinco in 2008.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We’d like to see Chad Johnson get his focus back to football. He should stop tweeting so much and spend more time studying his playbook. Johnson is not the same player he used to be, but may be the Dolphins most productive WR in 2012.

OAK – QB Carson Palmer sees offensive potential

Source: ProFootballTalk.com

Oakland Raiders QB Carson Palmer believes the team’s offense has the firepower to score a lot of points this upcoming season. ‘With Darren McFadden in the backfield, an offensive line that is hungry. They’re gonna open up great holes for him,’ Palmer said. ‘And then a lot of speed on the outside. Really fast receivers with a lot of playaction stuff. I’m excited. Having a chance to play for Coach Knapp, I’m excited.’

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

McFadden is one of the best RBs in the game today, but has yet to play a full 16 game season during his pro career. We like the receiving weapons the Raiders have compiled over the last two years. Guys like Denarius Moore and Juron Criner could help Palmer finish as a top 15 fantasy Quarterback.

BAL – QB Joe Flacco believes he’s sticking around

Source: Carroll County Times – Aaron Wilson

Baltimore Ravens QB Joe Flacco isn’t concerned about the pace of contract discussions or whether a deal will be struck in a particular amount of time as he prepares to report to training camp. Flacco is confident he will remain in Baltimore for the long term. ‘I’m not worried about it,’ Flacco said. ‘I told (agent) Joe (Linta) don’t even call me. I’m not worried about it. Unless you have some kind of crazy news, then don’t concern me with it. I’m going to go out there, I’m going to play, I’m going to practice. There really is no time table. If it happens, it happens. I see myself being here for many years, no matter what happens.’

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Ravens are working feverishly to lock down Flacco but no deal is imminent. Flacco’s agent feels his client should be paid like a top 5 QB, but the team is unlikely to give up that kind of money. If no deal is hammered out this year the Ravens could always use the Franchise Tag on Flacco next offseason.

PHI – QB Michael Vick stands behind dynasty comment

Source: NFL.com

Philadelphia Eagles QB Michael Vick said he is standing behind comments he made regarding the team emerging into a dynasty. ‘That’s just me speaking out of confidence, and I think if you ask my teammates they’ll tell you the same thing, that they feel the same way,’ Vick said. ‘As a quarterback that’s just how I feel. You’ve got to speak it into existence. You gotta aim to shoot for the stars, and if you miss at least you’ll be amongst them, and … I think that’s gotta be our mind-set. But it all starts on the practice field. It all starts right now, it all starts here and that’s going out and putting in the hard work and the effort to get there.’

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Vick would be best served just to let his play do the talking. We usually don’t consider teams a potential dynasty until they’ve won two Super Bowls. The Eagles have zero in the history of the franchise.

CLE – Backup RB battle to be heated

Source: Akron Beacon Journal – Nate Ulrich

The only real competition at the running back position for the Cleveland Browns is to determine who will become the primary backup to RB Trent Richardson. The team likely will favor whoever proves to be the best receiving threat and pass protector, especially on third down. Contributions on special teams might be a deciding factor, too. Head coach Pat Shurmur said RBs Montario Hardesty and Brandon Jackson would both play this year, but it is uncertain who will have a more prominent role. RB Chris Ogbonnaya is also in the mix, and his ability on special teams will help his cause should one of the others falter or suffer injury.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We like Hardesty’s natural ability but he’s been unable to stay healthy during most of his college and pro career. Jackson is looking to make a comeback and has good versatility because of his receiving ability.

DET – Ryan Broyles expects to be ready for start of camp

Source: Detroit Free Press – Dave Birkett

Detroit Lions WR Ryan Broyles (knee) said he believes he will be able to something when training camp begins and does not expect to be placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Broyles is making an extremely speedy recovery here. He’s coming back from a knee injury he suffered last year in October playing for the Oklahoma Sooners. We like Broyles best as a slot WR because of his crisp route running and run after the catch ability. He’ll compete with Nate Burleson and Titus Young for targets behind superstar Calvin Johnson.

KC – Top two TEs expected to see significant playing time

Source: The Kansas City Star – Adam Teicher

Kansas City Chiefs TEs Tony Moeaki and Kevin Boss are expected to receive a lot of playing time this season. The team may use two-tight end sets often during the season.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Getting Moeaki back is a huge boost for the Chiefs passing game. He’s a quality move TE with the speed to attack the deep middle seam of the defense. However, Moeaki has an extensive injury history dating back to his days in college. If he can stay healthy this year he could perform like a top 12 fantasy TE.

KC – Would like to use top two RBs a lot

Source: The Kansas City Star – Adam Teicher

The Kansas City Chiefs would like RBs Jamaal Charles and Peyton Hillis to touch the ball 500 times combined this season.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Chiefs could use both in the backfield at the same time. Both Hillis and Charles are good receivers with Hillis being the better short yardage runner and Charles being the best big play threat. We see this as a hothand approach for the Chiefs in 2012, which complicates things for fantasy owners.

NFL – RB Travis Henry wants to make a comeback

Source: thesidelineview.com – Adam Caplan

Former NFL RB Travis Henry is hoping to make a comeback in the NFL. Henry will turn 34 in October.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Henry has been in federal prison since 2009 on a drug trafficking conviction. We can’t imagine any team interested in the troubled back. The only way he’ll play in the NFL this season is by creating himself as a player in Madden 2013.

DAL – RB Felix Jones cleared for practice

Source: ESPNDallas.com – Calvin Watkins

Dallas Cowboys RB Felix Jones (shoulder) has been medically cleared to practice before the start of training camp, according to a source.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Good news for Jones here. He’s extremely talented but has been setback by injuries during his pro career. Jones is going to play as the primary backup RB behind Demarco Murray.

DET – CB Aaron Berry released

Source: ESPN – Adam Schefter

The Detroit Lions have released CB Aaron Berry.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

No surprise here. Berry was arrested twice in the last month, and the team wanted to move on. He was arrested for DUI on June 26th, then arrested again on Saturday night after waiving a loaded firearm at three people. Now that Berry is off the team guys like Alphonso Smith, Dwight Bentley, and Jacob Lacey will compete for the starting Right Cornerback position.

DAL – Morris Claiborne signed

Source: NFL.com

The Dallas Cowboys have signed first-round draft choice CB Morris Claiborne to a four-year deal worth $16.26 million.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

A great pick by the Cowboys here. Their secondary was weak last year, but they made huge upgrades when they added Brandon Carr in free agency and drafted Claiborne in the first-round of the 2012 NFL Draft. Claiborne has great speed and transitions out of his backpedal smoothly. He has the ability to be a shutdown CB in the league.

DAL – CB Mike Jenkins to report Wednesday

Source: ESPNDallas.com – Calvin Watkins

Dallas Cowboys CB Mike Jenkins (shoulder) will report with rookies and injured players to start training camp Wednesday, July 25, according to a source. Jenkins missed voluntary workouts because he was upset by a lack of progress regarding a new contract; however, he did report for mandatory workouts.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Jenkins has yet to be cleared medically as he’s still recovering from offseason shoulder surgery. He’ll play as the team’s third CB this year behind rookie Morris Claiborne and free agent addition Brandon Carr.

PHI – Mychal Kendricks to open camp as starter

Source: Philadelphia Inquirer – Jeff McLane

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy Reid said Sunday, July 22, that LB Mychal Kendricks will open training camp as the team’s starting strong-side linebacker.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Kendricks was the heart and soul of the Cal defense last year and he lined up as both Inside and Outside Linebacker. He’s not the biggest prospect but is a high effort player who makes plays because of his non-stop motor.

BUF – OLB Shawne Merriman looking to bounce back

Source: BuffaloBills.com – Chris Brown

Buffalo Bills LB Shawne Merriman (Achilles’) is attempting to re-capture his status as a premier player in the NFL this season. He spent a good deal of time at the right end position in the team’s nickel package during spring practices.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Merriman has been slowed down in recent years by injuries and is certainly not the same player he used to be. We’re not expecting him to recapture his former glory, but could be a quality rotational pass rusher for the Bills if he can stay healthy.

NYG – RB Ahmad Bradshaw expected to get goal line carries

Source: ESPNNewYork.com – Ohm Youngmisuk

New York Giants RB Ahmad Bradshaw is expected to receive a majority of the goal line carries this season.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Bradshaw is a good inside/out runner and not afraid to run between the tackles. We’ll see if his body can hold up with this increased workload in 2012. Rookie David Wilson is his primary backup, but he could be an effective feature back if given the opportunity.

ARI – Michael Floyd not in great shape

Source: NFL.com

Arizona Cardinals WR Michael Floyd is reportedly not in great shape, which explains why he currently is projected as the team’s No. 4 wide receiver. There are also some early questions about his quickness and work ethic.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Those concerns also arose after he missed several days of Larry Fitzgerald’s personal WR camp. Floyd is going to start as fourth on the depth chart behind Fitzgerald, Early Doucet, and Andre Roberts. He has the ability to be a WR1 in the NFL, but will need to work his way up. The team is not going to rush his development and Floyd may not have much of a fantasy impact early this season.

ARI – WR Andre Roberts could start at WR

Source: NFL.com

Arizona Cardinals WR Andre Roberts is the favorite to start opposite WR Larry Fitzgerald at wide receiver.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Roberts has the speed to stretch the field, and will only see one-on-one coverage as teams focus on Larry Fitzgerald. This would make Early Doucet the team’s slot WR, and rookie Michael Floyd would only see the field when the team went to a four-WR set.

OAK – Can RB Darren McFadden stay healthy?

Source: CBSSports.com – Clark Judge

Oakland Raiders RB Darren McFadden has missed 16 of his last 44 starts and has not gone one of his four pro seasons without sitting down because of injury.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It’s a huge question mark for a player who has never played a full 16-game season. McFadden is clearly one of the best RBs in the game today and could finish the year as the best RB in fantasy football if only he could stay healthy. He’s the centerpiece of the Raiders offense and will get the majority of the workload at the RB position once again this year.

DEN – Need more than QB Peyton Manning

Source: NFL.com

Denver Broncos executive vice president of football operations John Elway said the team will need more than QB Peyton Manning to be considered a Super Bowl favorite this upcoming season. ‘One guy doesn’t win a world championship for you, even though he gives you a hell of a chance to be able to compete,’ Elway said. ‘As I told (Manning), my job is to get the best quality people around him, the best coaches to give us the opportunity to win a world championship. It’s fun to be able to put that puzzle together, but there are so many different pieces to put in a team that has the ability to win a world championship.’

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The team is hopeful a Jack Del Rio led defense can help the team go further than it did last year. Having Manning under center will mean fewer three and outs, thus the defense should be fresher when they step onto the field. Manning is also going to be helped out by a strong ground game. John Fox loves to run the ball and that sentiment won’t simply disappear because of a new QB. Willis McGahee and Ronnie Hillman will help the Broncos immensely on what they hope can be a deep run into the playoffs.

NYJ – Tim Tebow works out with throwing guru

Source: ESPNLosAngeles.com

New York Jets QB Tim Tebow has been working out with a throwing guru on the campus of the University of Southern California for the past week. Tebow has spent the past five days making adjustments to his throwing motion under the tutelage of Tom House, a former major league pitcher now working as a volunteer pitching coach at USC.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We give a lot of credit to Tebow for working on his biggest flaw (passing mechanices). However, Tebow’s mechanics will never be textbook and we’d rather see him work on making quicker decisions with the football. Tebow needs better anticipation and pre-snap reads if he’s going to show improvement as a passer.

SD – Two favorites for complementary touches at RB

Source: The San Diego Union-Tribune – Michael Gehlken

San Diego Chargers RB Ronnie Brown and FB Le’Ron McClain are considered the favorites for complementary touches behind starting RB Ryan Mathews heading into training camp and the preseason.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Mathews is going to get a huge workload this season and could finish the year as a top 5 fantasy RB. When he needs a breather we feel the team will rely mostly on Brown. However, if it’s a short-yardage situation then we could see them look to the bigger and more powerful McClain.

BAL – Anthony Allen likely to open camp as No. 2 RB

Source: The Baltimore Sun – Jeff Zrebiec

Baltimore Ravens RB Anthony Allen is likely to open training camp July 26 as the primary backup to starting RB Ray Rice. Allen will be trying to hold off RBs Damien Berry, Bernard Pierce and Bobby Rainey.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Allen may begin the season as the primary backup behind Ray Rice, but if you’re looking for a handcuff look elsewhere. We think rookie Bernard Pierce is the true backup and should win the job in training camp. Pierce is a more naturally gifted runner than Allen, and has better speed in the open field.

GB – Could trade WR James Jones

Source: ProFootballWeekly.com

The Green Bay Packers may consider trading WR James Jones at some point if a serious need at another position develops.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Packers may have a serious need at backup QB as they currently have Graham Harrell as their QB2 behind Aaron Rodgers. Jones has the ability to be a starter, but is buried on the depth chart in Green Bay.

DEN – Expected to sign two picks before camp

Source: The Denver Post – Mike Klis

The Denver Broncos are expected to sign second-round draft choice QB Brock Osweiler and third-round draft choice RB Ronnie Hillman before the start of training camp.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Osweiler would like to be paid a QB premium even though he was a late second-round pick. We have a feeling the Broncos will be able to put in some incentives/bonuses to make the young QB happy. Training camp starts Thursday and both should be there from day one.

BUF – No. 2 QB still undecided

Source: BuffaloBills.com – Chris Brown

Buffalo Bills head coach Chan Gailey remained coy regarding the battle for the team’s No. 2 quarterback job, only saying QBs Tyler Thigpen and Vince Young will battle it out during training camp and the preseason. ‘I think it’s going to be a good competition,’ Gailey said. ‘Tyler has the advantage of being here and being in the system. Vince has the advantage of playing in games and the experience. Vince has more experience than Tyler. Tyler has more experience in this offense than Vince. So there’s a trade-off there. It depends on who ends up doing the best job during the course of the entire preseason.’

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We have a feeling Young should win this job. He’s more physically gifted than Thigpen and has a stronger arm. We’ll see this competition play itself out during training camp. The loser of this battle has a good chance of being cut by the team if they choose to only carry two QBs on the roster.

NFL – Matt Barkley drafted ahead of Robert Griffin?

Source: ProFootballTalk.com – Michael David Smith

Southern California QB Matt Barkley said he is confident he would have been selected ahead of Washington Redskins QB Robert Griffin III if he had declared for the 2012 NFL Draft. ‘I had confidence in that – I think I could have been,’ Barkley said.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Barkley is likely going to be the first overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft. We like his ability as a pocket passer, but getting drafted ahead of RG3 would have been too close to call.

MIN – QB Brett Favre returned for the money

Source: Pioneer Press

Former NFL QB Brett Favre said the reason he decided to forgo retirement in 2010 and return to the Minnesota Vikings was due to financial reasons. ‘The money was too good,’ Favre said. ‘I hate to say it’s about money, but I felt the money was a lot.’ The Vikings lured Favre back for a 20th season with a contract worth upwards of $20 million.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That type of money would be hard for anyone to resist. It’s refreshing to hear Favre answer honestly.

NFL – Still many first-round picks unsigned

Source: NFL.com

Cleveland Browns RB Trent Richardson, Minnesota Vikings OT Ryan Kalil, Jacksonville Jaguars WR Justin Blackmon, Dallas Cowboys CB Morris Claiborne, Miami Dolphins QB Ryan Tannehill, Kansas City Chiefs DT Dontari Poe, Tennessee Titans WR Kendall Wright, Cleveland Browns QB Brandon Weeden, Detroit Lions OT Riley Reiff and Pittsburgh Steelers OG David DeCastro are the remaining first-round draft picks left to be signed.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

With training camp starting for most teams in the next 7-10 days we feel all of these picks will be signed very soon. The new rookie wage scale will prevent the long holdouts we used to see.

BUF – Chan Gailey likes team depth

Source: NFL.com

Buffalo Bills head coach Chan Gailey said the 2012 version of the team is his deepest yet. ‘Not even close,’ Gailey said. ‘(General manager) Buddy (Nix) and I laugh from time to time. It’s a good laugh. We were trying to find 53 players that we thought could help us win that first year. This year we may have to let some good football players go that we wouldn’t even have thought about (releasing) two years ago.’

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Bills have been patient in constructing the current incarnation of the team. They’ll have the best defensive front 4 in the league, and improved secondary, and a RB corps featuring two dangerous weapons (Fred Jackson, C.J. Spiller). These are just a few of the reasons why we think the Bills could push for a playoff spot in 2012.

DAL – QB Tony Romo expects WR Dez Bryant to emerge from incident

Source: ESPN.com

Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo said he expects WR Dez Bryant to come back to the team stronger than ever following a domestic altercation with his mother. ‘He had a great offseason, he’s improved tremendously in the last six months, and he’s going to have a good season this year and he’s going to continue to develop as a football player,’ Romo said.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We like the optimism from Romo here, but we’ll believe it when we see it. It’s now or never for Bryant. He’s got the natural physical talent to be one of the top 5 WRs in the game today. However, in two years he’s had only one 100-yard game, no 1,000-yard seasons, and has not made the impact the Cowboys expected when they selected him in the first-round of the 2010 NFL Draft.

SD – Trio of RBs have added company

Source: The San Diego Union-Tribune – Michael Gehlken

The San Diego Chargers signed RB Jackie Battle Friday, July 20, making things much tougher for RBs Edwin Baker, Curtis Brinkley and Michael X. Hayes heading into training camp and the preseason.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The team lost FB Mike Tolbert in free agency, and Battle will compete with Le’Ron McClain to help fill that void. We don’t expect Battle to get as many touches as Tolbert but he does have the versatility to contribute as a runner and receiver out of the backfield. Norv Turner has said the team will give RB Ryan Mathews ‘as much as he can handle’ this year.

STL – Trumaine Johnson could change position

Source: ProFootballWeekly.com

The St. Louis Rams may decide to move CB Trumaine Johnson to safety during training camp.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Johnson is position versatile and it’s one of the many reasons he was such an intriguing prospect in the 2012 NFL Draft. The converted WR has the size, speed, and body control to make plays on the football. Johnson also has high football intelligence and can quickly diagnose plays as they unfold in front of him.

TB – DT Roy Miller expected to be on bubble

Source: ProFootballWeekly.com

Tampa Bay Buccaneers DT Roy Miller is expected to be on the roster bubble during training camp. Miller’s playing time likely will decrease if he does make the roster unless there is an injury.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Miller is a high motor player who gets by on heart and hustle. The Bucs could choose to keep him and use him in a limited role. This may prevent him from wearing down as the season goes on.

ATL – ILB Lofa Tatupu to meet with Dr. Andrews

Source: The Atlanta Journal-Constitution – D. Orlando Ledbetter

Atlanta Falcons LB Lofa Tatupu (pectoral) is scheduled to meet with Dr. James Andrews Monday, July 23, to determine the extent of his pectoral injury.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It’s never a good sign when a player has to meet with Dr. Andrews. Tatupu is unlikely to participate in training camp, and could begin the season on the PUP list.

TEN – WR Kenny Britt arrested for DUI

Source: The Tennessean – Jim Wyatt

Tennessee Titans WR Kenny Britt was arrested and charged with DUI Friday, July 20.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Britt avoided a suspension last year because his transgressions happened during the lockout. This is Britt’s eighth arrest since he became a pro in 2009. He won’t escape a suspension this time. Between his three offseason knee surgeries, a likely suspension, and the propensity to keep doing these kinds of things, Britt is looking like a WR3/WR4 pick in the 7th-10th round range at best.

DAL – WR Dez Bryant could face suspension

Source: ESPNDallas.com – Todd Archer

Dallas Cowboys WR Dez Bryant could face a one-game suspension for his arrest for misdemeanor family violence.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Bryant has had enough off-field incidents now to get the wrong kind of attention from commissioner Roger Goodell. The Cowboys have no clear-cut number three receiver, so there might be an opening night starting job up for grabs this summer in Dallas. Bryant should not be taken earlier than the fourth round until this is resolved.

SD – RB Jackie Battle agrees to terms

Source: Chargers.com

The San Diego Chargers have agreed to terms with free-agent RB Jackie Battle (Chiefs) on a one-year deal. Financial terms were not disclosed.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Battle joins Ronnie Brown and seventh-round pick Edwin Baker as offseason additions to the team’s running back corps. Only one of the three of them and 2011 third-stringer Curtis Brinkley is likely to make the team with fullback LeRon McClain also able to be a backup ball carrier.

ATL – Peter Konz has chance to win starting job

Source: The Atlanta Journal-Constitution – D. Orlando Ledbetter

Atlanta Falcons C Peter Konz is a serious candidate to win the starting right guard position during training camp.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Right guard was a real sore spot on the offensive line for the Falcons last year. Konz could be an upgrade over Garrett Reynolds if free agent Vince Manuwai can’t regain his old form. The Falcons offensive line being settled and gelling might be the most important story of their training camp this year.

PHI – Nick Foles could have chance at No. 2 QB job

Source: Philadelphia Inquirer – Jeff McLane

Philadelphia Eagles QB Nick Foles will enter training camp as the No. 3 quarterback but is expected to be given the chance to compete with QB Mike Kafka for the No. 2 quarterback job.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Kafka is probably the favorite with Foles having no experience in the NFL or in the Eagles system. If he can beat out Kafka, look for the 2010 fourth-round pick to get cut.

ARI – Rob Housler will be given chance to be impact player

Source: The Arizona Republic – Kent Somers

The Arizona Cardinals will give TE Rob Housler every opportunity to become a breakout player this season. He was a part of a lot of plays during offseason workouts because the coaching staff wanted to get him as much experience as possible.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Housler has good speed and size, and he could benefit from the coverage that Larry Fitzgerald draws with regularity. He is a deep sleeper in redraft leagues, not worth selecting, but monitoring as a potential early season waiver wire pickup.

TB – Michael Smith looking for starting job

Source: The Tampa Tribune – Roy Cummings

Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Michael Smith said he is going to training camp looking to win the starting running back job and make an immediate impact on offense.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Smith is a speedy smaller back who could win a few change of pace touches. We like his competitive fire, but he won’t pass LeGarrette Blount or Doug Martin on the depth chart in training camp.

MIA – WRs hoping QB competition does not last long

Source: South Florida Sun-Sentinel – Omar Kelly

Miami Dolphins WR Brian Hartline said the wide receivers are hoping the quarterback competition does not take too long because they need to build a chemistry with the starting quarterback. ‘You need situations where he throws a bad ball, but you bail him out. You need to gain confidence in that, and vice versa. You run a bad route, but he’s got your back. You want to start feeling that. You want to [have a chemistry] where he just throws the ball up and you begin to make plays for each other. That helps grow the chemistry and a bond,” Hartline said.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Ryan Tannehill has already been put on the back burner. We expect the David Garrard vs. Matt Moore decision to be done before the third preseason game, but whoever the winner is won’t be worth drafting except in the deepest of leagues. The outcome also won’t change the marginal value of the Miami wide receiver corps.

BUF – Stevie Johnson looking to improve his yards after catch

Source: BuffaloBills.com – Chris Brown

Buffalo Bills WR Stevie Johnson said he worked this offseason on trying to improve his yard after catch stats. He recorded 342 yards after the catch last season but only averaged 4.5 yards after each catch. Johnson said he believes his groin injury affected his ability to create yards after the catch.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Johnson was still productive through his injury, but there’s no doubt that he can be even better if he stays healthy this year. He is available outside of the top 20 receivers, showing the value at the position this year.

DET – Riley Reiff may not be signed before camp

Source: Detroit Free Press – Carlos Monarrez

The Detroit Lions are working on signing first-round draft choice OT Riley Reiff but there is a chance an agreement may not be reached until after the start of training camp. Reiff and his agent may be waiting for the Minnesota Vikings to sign OT Ryan Kalil before signing with the Lions.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Reiff and other prospects in the early 20s of the first round are trying to get partial or full guarantees of the fourth year of their contract. No. 25 pick Dont’a Hightower got no such guarantee, so Reiff and no. 24 pick David DeCastro may have to give in on this point before they sign.

TB – No favorite in RB job

Source: PewterReport.com – Mark Cook

Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Greg Schiano said neither RB LeGarrette Blount or RB Doug Martin are considered the favorite for the starting running back job. Schiano said the reps at running back will be given out in an appropriate manner.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Martin is still the running back with the more well-rounded skillset and the bigger commitment from the coaching staff and organization. Their ADP should not be as far apart as it is, but that’s more because Blount’s is too low than it is about Martin’s being too high.

TB – Mark Barron agrees to terms

Source: NFL Network – Michael Lombardi

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have agreed to terms with first-round draft choice FS Mark Barron on a four-year deal worth $14.5 million.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

After Robert Griffin III signed, the rest of the early first-round picks and teams had no excuses left to drag their heels on getting contracts drawn up and signed. With training camps beginning next week, look for the rest of the top eight to fall into place very soon.

SD – DT Aubrayo Franklin agrees to terms

Source: KFFL.com

The San Diego Chargers have agreed to terms with free-agent DT Aubrayo Franklin (Saints) on a one-year deal. Financial terms were not disclosed.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Franklin can take some quality snaps at nose tackle against the run in the Chargers 3-4 defense. He was a bust as a 4-3 defensive tackle in New Orleans last year.

PHI – Thought CB Asante Samuel was in decline

Source: Philadelphia Inquirer – Jeff McLane

The Philadelphia Eagles traded CB Asante Samuel this offseason because head coach Andy Reid thought Samuel’s play was on the decline and that he no longer fit the Eagles’ defensive scheme.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Eagles basically let the league know that they would trade Samuel for anything before Atlanta dealt for him, so this is not really a revelation.

DAL – Will resume talks with Morris Claiborne Monday

Source: DallasCowboys.com – Josh Ellis

The Dallas Cowboys will continue to negotiate with first-round draft choice CB Morris Claiborne Monday, July 23, in hopes of signing him before the start of training camp. The two sides still have to agree on the offset language in the contract.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

No. 7 pick Mark Barron signed today with no offset language, and No. 9 pick Luke Kuechly also has no offset language in his contract. This should get done soon with no offset language. Claiborne still hasn’t practiced with the team yet as he is recovering from wrist surgery.
